Yay! Guides are a great starter digital product.
A guide is a book that gives you the most important information on a specific topic. Guides are simple to create and require no fancy tools. The text content is formatted along with images to form a document. Then, it can be converted to a PDF format for easy downloading or viewing online.
Examples of effective guides include ebooks, “how to” guides, and photo tutorials.
Below you’ll find a few strategies that will help you build a solid foundation for your guide.

This is where a lot of people get stuck. They want to go wide with choosing their ideal customer instead of focusing on a specific type of person.
This is a big mistake! Don’t zoom out, zoom in.
Carving out a specific segment of people for your product to focus on means you can speak directly to them and their needs.
This makes everything you do from content creation to product development to marketing much easier because your product was designed to meet the needs of your ideal customer.
You probably already have an idea of who those people are but the more specific you can get the better. Write down everything you know about them. What characteristics do they share?
Your product alone can’t solve all of your audience’s problems. That’s not a knock on your capabilities. People are complex. It would be overwhelming to try.
Instead of trying to create a product that solves all of your audience’s problems, focus on solving 1 specific problem.
Sit down with a notebook to ask yourself questions like…
– What is the problem? Why are they struggling with this specific thing?
– Why haven’t they fixed this problem on their own? What are they missing?
The result will be more clarity around the product that your audience actually needs versus what you think they want.
A product that’s designed to help everyone will be too broad to be useful.
Brilliantly designed products are created with a specific group of people in mind, they pinpoint a real problem or challenge, and they offer a focused solution.
Specificity is important. The clearer you are about the intended audience for your product the easier it will be for you to create and sell it.
