It’s storytime, friends. I got my start working online waaaaay back in 2008. Back then I was a starry-eyed fashion blogger plotting world domination from my now defunct online headquarters Your Style Star. At the time Etsy was emerging as the premier handmade marketplace, Myspace was still the bomb.com and Twitter was the place where “tech” people hung out. The online space was much quieter so it wasn’t as difficult to get noticed.
Fast forward 9 years and the landscape has completely changed. Everyone is online. Everyone is creating content. Some of it is damn good content. Just take a scroll through your favorite Blog, YouTube channel, Instagram feed or Snapchat channel.
See what I mean?
It’s no longer enough to just create content. Your content needs to be stellar and strategic if you want to build credibility, captivate your audience and convert them to buyers. I wouldn’t say it’s easy but it’s definitely not rocket science.
What is Content Strategy?
Content Strategy is a systematic way that you use various mediums (written, video, audio) and platforms to share your brand’s message to achieve a specific result.
In simpler terms, Content Strategy is a way to let people know what you do, why you do it and that you have a solution to their problem. Your content does the heavy lifting of educating and informing your audience of their need for your product/service. Sounds pretty powerful, right?
Unfortunately, most creative businesses, bloggers, and coaches are operating without a clear and effective content strategy. If you’re looking for a way to stand out amongst the masses of bloggers, infopreneurs, and coaches, your content strategy is your edge.
Here are a few reasons why:
Reason #1: Your content informs people of your expertise.
If you want people to view you as an authority don’t hold back the goodness that you have to share. As a matter of fact share your best content and deliver real value to your audience. Be clever. Share actionable tips and tricks that you use in your business. Create and curate the very best content (blogs, videos, resources) to share with your audience and you’ll gain a reputation in your industry for being an expert.
Reason #2: Your content primes people to buy.
People buy from brands that they like, know and trust. This is an indisputable fact. If your content has proven to them that you’re knowledgeable, trustworthy and that you can deliver what your sales page has promised, your clients will loosen the grip on their wallets.
Reason #3: Your content helps you attract your ideal clients.
You’ve got an ideal client avatar written up, right? I bet after you finished writing it you wondered, “How am I going to find this person?”.
The answer is super simple, they’re going to find you through your content. If you’ve narrowed in on the right person, your content strategy will help you figure out which topics that your ideal client would find useful. Creating the right content will resonate with your perfect people. Making it easier for them to find you when they are researching certain topics. It’ll also be easier for you to figure out where you need to position yourself to be found.
Don’t sleep on the power of good content. It’s the fastest and most effective way to standout out in the noisy online space.
I’m curious to know do you have a content strategy to get the word out about your brand? Talk to me in the comments about what’s stopping you from creating one?
